🇻🇳 Iconic Vietn

1. The Nón Lá (Conical Hat) Craft

The iconic conical leaf hat is a symbol of Vietnam, used for centuries to protect people from both sun and rain.

  • The Craft: Cut a large circle out of stiff cardstock or a paper plate. Cut a single slit from the edge to the center. Overlap the edges to create a cone shape and staple or glue it.
  • Decorate: Kids can paint traditional scenes of rice paddies or use markers to draw bamboo patterns on the outside. Punch two holes and add a ribbon to tie under the chin!

2. Paper Water Puppets

Water puppetry (Múa rối nước) is a tradition that dates back to the 11th century in the villages of the Red River Delta.

  • The Craft: Draw and color a character (like a dragon or a traditional farmer) on heavy paper. Cut it out and laminate it or cover it in clear tape to make it “waterproof.”
  • The Play: Attach the figure to a long wooden dowel. Kids can stand behind a blue sheet or even use a shallow tub of water to perform their own traditional puppet show!

3. Star-Shaped Paper Lanterns

For National Day or the Mid-Autumn Festival, star lanterns are everywhere in Vietnam.

  • The Craft: Use five red and yellow craft sticks to form a star shape, or use a printable star template. Cover the frame with thin colored cellophane or tissue paper.
  • The Detail: Add a yellow star in the center to represent the Vietnamese flag, symbolising the five main classes in Vietnamese society (intellectuals, farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, and soldiers).

💡 Fun Facts for Kids

  • The Name: “Vietnam” translates to “Southern Viet,” which was the name of the ancient kingdom in the region.
  • The Coffee Capital: Vietnam is the world’s second-largest producer of coffee! Maybe the adults can enjoy a Cà phê sữa đá (iced milk coffee) while the kids craft.
  • Motorbike Mania: In cities like Ho Chi Minh, there are almost as many motorbikes as there are people. It’s a organized chaos that is a sight to behold!
