1. Create the Shell
Take a long pipe cleaner (choose a bright, snappy color!) and start rolling it from one end into a tight spiral. Keep rolling until you have about 2 inches of pipe cleaner left over. This spiral is your snail’s sturdy house!
2. Form the Body
Take a second pipe cleaner (a contrasting color looks great) and fold it in half. Place the spiral shell in the center of the fold. Twist the two ends of the second pipe cleaner together at the front and back of the shell to secure it.
3. Add the Head and Antennas
At the front end, bend the tips of the pipe cleaner upward to create two little antennas.
Did you know? Those antennas actually have eyes at the very tips! Snails can pull them back in an instant if they feel a tiny bit of danger.
4. The Finishing Touches
- Eyes: Glue tiny googly eyes to the tips of the antennas.
- Smile: Since snails have those surprisingly toothy mouths, give yours a happy expression! You can use a small scrap of paper or a tiny bead for a mouth.
💎 Fun Fact: Diamond-Strength Teeth?
You mentioned snail teeth being incredibly strong—it’s true! The teeth of the limpet (a type of sea snail) are made of a mineral-protein composite that is technically the strongest biological material ever tested. It’s so tough that scientists are studying its structure to build better planes and Formula 1 cars!
